‘Up2Speed™’ CPD Accredited Course Teaches Fundamentals of Working in the NHS

Jun 22, 2015.

With frontline staff training at the fore of NHS workforce agendas, healthcare professionals are now able to gain invaluable CPD accredited course which teaches the fundamental, non-clinical aspects of working in today’s challenging and complex NHS environment.

The half-day workshop, Up2Speed™, is designed for those new to working in the NHS, but also offers advice and guidance for senior colleagues on mentoring and coaching junior members of staff. Course content focuses on the working practices and ethics of the NHS, though it can be tailored based on the delegates’ experience and learning requirements.

From breaking bad news, conflict resolution to encouraging doctor-nurse team working, this 3 CPD point accredited workshop ensures medical students are ‘Up2Speed™’, ready to hit the ground running on their first official hospital placement. Likewise, experienced healthcare professionals looking to take on a leadership role are advised on how they can make this happen.

Initial discussions between Dr Kishan Rees and Dr Matthew Dolling, Deputy Director of Medical Education and Consultant Anaesthetist at United Lincolnshire Hospitals NHS Trust’s Undergraduate Medical Education Department (UMEC), led to the launch of the course.

“At the UMEC we teach medical students from the University of Leicester and the University of Nottingham, and I see the Up2Speed™ course as an extension of the daily work already being done to ensure the students are ready for life as a doctor or nurse,” said Dr Dolling.

WatMed educational is signed as an exclusive partner to ID Medical School which means ID Medical is the only healthcare recruiter able to offer this unique training. ‘Up2Speed™’ is delivered in an informal and friendly environment where all members are encouraged to participate, and the course complements the preceding half-day Clinical Skills Workshop.

Caryn Cooper, head of ID Medical School, commented, “We identified the need to offer our locum workforce numerous learning opportunities to develop their skills and professional portfolio with CPD accredited courses.

Following the success of the Clinical Skills Workshop, where a lot of topics are discussed that would be useful to people new to working in NHS settings, we commissioned WatMed educational to deliver a unique and exclusive course – Up2Speed™. We are confident this will be a popular course among our 45,000+ registered and compliant healthcare professionals, as well as medical students.

We truly believe investing in our candidates’ and the next generation of healthcare professionals’ training and development is fundamental to ensuring a high level of patient care and safety is continually delivered.”

Dr Kishan Rees added, “I firmly believe we should expose locums and NHS staff working in temporary roles to the same educational opportunities as those in training jobs. Up2Speed™ is the first of a series in WatMed educational’s portfolio designed to achieve this.”

He echoed the aforementioned sentiments and has always taken a keen role in helping international medical graduates acclimatise and adjust to working in the NHS.

Mr West commented, “With locum doctors and agency nurses pivotal to sustained patient care,  cpd accredited course like Up2Speed™ really are essential for helping their successful integration into one of the most complex healthcare systems in the world.”
